We're an autistic/woman-owned, family-run flower farm and bookstore 25-minutes from Hudson, New York at the foot of the Catskill Mountains.

We do regenerative farming, a nature-based agriculture solution that is rethinking the entire conventional (and extractive!) farm operation. It helps us do our part for the planet by building biodiversity, creating habitats for small mammals and songbirds, increasing soil health, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Nature writing is at the core of Treehorn Farm. Our curated selection of books is focused on flowers, forests, nature, farming, neurodiversity, and making the world a better place for readers of all ages, all neurotypes, and all backgrounds. The vast majority of our books are written by women.

What’s in our bouquets this weekend and why should you buy them?

WHAT? Sweet pea-only bouquets as well as mixed bouquets with sweet peas, peonies, ranunculus, anemones, violas, fillers.

WHY? Oh, let us count the reasons:

1️⃣ The scent is intoxicating. Some smell like honey. Others, like sugared almonds. A few smell positively musky. Together, they create a dizzying (albeit heavenly) olfactory circus.

2️⃣ I mean, c’mon, look at ‘em. They’re gorgeous. We’ve been growing these puppies since January and they don’t disappoint.

3️⃣ We fought a major war against every single army of mosquitos and ticks stationed along the Eastern Seaboard to pick them. We won, but just barely. (*send Calamine*)

4️⃣ Your purchase fuels our autistic and woman-owned, family-run farm. And buying local ensures more money is pumped directly back into our community.

5️⃣ Our flowers are grown using zero chemicals. We practice regenerative agriculture.

6️⃣ Sweet peas represent departures — and they’re also a symbol of lasting friendship. They make a great gift for comings and goings and everything in between.

7️⃣ The warm weather yielded buckets and buckets of blooms. We’d rather you enjoy them than let our walk-in cooler have its way with them.

Stop by this weekend to pick up yours — we’re open Saturday and Sunday 11:30-5:00. Bouquets are available until they sell out. (We recommend reserving a bouquet for pick-up.)

We want to thank the Ranunculus for showing up this year.

As first year farmers, we’re learning which flowers we enjoy growing — and also which ones grow well for us.

Growing Ranunculus is akin to never giving up on the black sheep in the family… you think, jeepers, is this kid gonna make it? Then they go ahead and exceed expectations, outshining the rest of their peers.

We started growing our Ranunculus in January. They didn’t want to come up… until they did.

Then, they came up in spades. We grew them under low hoops, using frost covers. We brought our baby out in snow and sleet to tend to them. We doused them in hope.

We didn’t have enough customers to buy all of our bouquets — and we didn’t do wholesale this year (not sure if that’s a selling channel we want to do, yet, as we value meeting our customers!).

There were moments when we thought, why the heck are we growing these flowers? But we learned a lot. And our customer base is growing… people are now buying our flowers. We’re so thankful for every customer who finds our blooms as beautiful as we do!

In another week or two, we’ll dig up the corms (roots) from these plants and store them until late winter. And we’ll cover crop the rows, building soil as well go.

We’ll have the last of this year’s Ranunculus in bouquets this weekend — come and get ‘em by visiting our store or DM to reserve a bunch!

Palestine is lightyears removed from what we see portrayed by most media, politicians, and pundits. Many generations of its people have created profoundly beautiful art, music, dance, poetry, food, farms, and gardens.

Palestinians are just as worthy of their fundamental human rights as the rest of us. To engage deeply with Palestinian issues means that we must also consider environmental and racial justice, colonialism, international and national policies, forced displacement, genocide and apartheid, and resistance. We can’t look away.

We continue to be horrified by what is being inflicted upon the Palestinian people — and we call for an end to it — and also for a dismantling of the colonialist regimes and policies that have normalized decades of war crimes.

At our core, most of us carry goodness. No matter where a person sits on the political spectrum, we can probably all agree with international law, which states that hurting civilians is criminal. That starving a population of people is wretched.

Education is power — it humanizes people fascist leaders would want us to deem inhuman. So, together, let’s keep reading, learning, and engaging with important issues.

Our customers have nearly cleared our shelves of books on Palestine, signaling to us that we’re reaching a tipping point — a vital moment when our voices, actions, and willpower will lead to change.

Expect to see these books — and more! — on our shelves. Books that educate as well as celebrate Palestinian people through food, art, poetry, and all manner of growing things. Until then: Free Palestine.

Oh — and if you’re wondering what Palestine has to do with flower farming… in a word… EVERYTHING. We’re all connected. Our humanity hinges on how well we love thy neighbor… ALL of our neighbors, near and far.

The sweet peas are POPPIN’. 🍿

We’ve decided to do a special short run CSA that features these incredibly fragrant flowers — $120 for four weeks, starting as early as the next few days.

Bouquets will include sweet peas and our final ranunculus and anemones, various fillers, and constellations of whichever wildflowers wave their blooms our way.

Pick up at our farm (day TBD) or delivery in Climax or Coxsackie (we could be convinced to deliver to other communities within a five mile radius of our farm).

Please note: Similar to lilacs, sweet peas have a shorter vase life than some other flowers — a few days — but a little sugar added to the water will provide them with a bit more energy and may extend their life another day or two. As cut flowers, sweet peas provide an opportunity to celebrate life in the moment, rather than focus on what is fleeting. They are a “glass full” type of bloom!

The very first bloom from one of the peonies we planted in the fall… the type? Lemon Chiffon. 🍋🍋🍋

We go gaga over peonies. Before deciding to buy our farm, we looked at another Upstate home that had a massive collection of well-established peonies on the property — ranging from common to rare varieties. We nearly put an offer on the home just to get the flowers… but the home and property weren’t perfect for us, so we ultimately decided against it.

Then, we came across a listing that had been on the market for a while. It might not have been every homebuyers’ favorite, but it checked off nearly every single one of the boxes on our list. And while there weren’t hundreds of peonies, there were two well-established bushes — along with a giant magnolia tree and ancient lilac tree. And the rest, as they say, is history.

We love our farm and the business we’ve created. Last fall, we put in a row of peonies — this fall we plan to plant several more. But we’re not going too overboard… we’ll have 100 plants, tops, and that’s where we’ll stop. They are not the most climate resilient crop, and as a farm passionate about incorporating regenerative agriculture practices, we will focus heavily on crops that can perform well as our climate continues to go haywire. But… ahhh… we couldn’t NOT plant at least some peonies.

(Oh — and yes, we know the rule is to debud year one peonies so that more energy will go toward growth that will yield bigger, healthier plants. But we couldn’t help but leave at least a few blooms on our plants.)

We started our sweet peas in January and planted them outdoors late February. We protected them from frost and rain and built a veritable jungle gym for them to climb. These flowers are a labor of love — and boy, have we labored over them! (But check out the last two photos to see why we think the labor is worth it!)

A couple varieties are now nearly ready to burst open — we’re crossing our fingers that they’ll yield enough blooms for our Grand Opening on Thursday… but we had also hoped they would burst open for Mother’s Day.

There’s something about farm-fresh flowers that we’ve always treasured — the arrangements are often a little wilder, less tame than what we find in many florist shops. Rather than rely on wholesalers, we’re forced to accept the gifts the land gives us in the moment — the unpredictability lends to lovely surprises.

We whipped up only a few bouquets this morning in the misty rain that yielded a few surprises — a bounty of not only a colorful bounty of Ranunculus and Anemone (which we’ve been growing since January!), but also an array of pennycress, tall grasses, native plantain, and even a few wild creeping buttercups that have found their way into our flower beds.

We’re in love… we think you will be, too. At $25 a pop, each arrangement quite literally brings a bit of our wild field into your home. (Also, don’t you think these would make lovely arrangements for wedding tables?!)

Oh, and we also have a few containers of edible violas — $6 each. They’re gorgeous (and tasty!) in drinks and baked goods.

We’re busy bees — planting rows and adding the finishing touches to our store before our Grand Opening next week (Thursday, May 29 | 11:30am).

Oh — and the photo depicts one of our Ranunculus (left) and a wild relation found in our field, a creeping buttercup, also known as Ranunculus repens… yep, these two are from the same family of plants, Ranunculaceae — of which there are over 2,000 known species around the world!

Sadly, the creeping buttercup, which was once sold as an ornamental plant, is now considered an invasive species — with a deep root ball, it’s not the easiest plant to get rid of… but we’ll give it our best shot.

UPDATE: The cover didn’t work. Our newly planted rows of dahlias are soaked. They’ll rot — or they won’t. At this point, there’s nothing more we can do except hope they’ll make it. And hope that the weather this spring will start working with us a bit.

A nor’easter is about to roll through, dumping a lot of rain. 💦💦💦

We just recently planted the first four rows of our dahlias. *long sigh*

Dahlias have tubers. Similar to potatoes, these tubers store the starch and genetic materials necessary for growing the plant. They are highly susceptible to rot if they are left in soil that is too soggy — especially in the first couple weeks after planting out before the roots of the plant get established.

So, we’re getting scrappy. Mark’s out there building a dahlia fortress that we can cover with plastic while Melissa is trying not to count out loud how many tubers we’ve already planted… (In the photo you can see Mark doing his thing… also pictured in the foreground is our first row of peonies, which we planted last autumn).

This spring is a soggy mess. People keep saying, “it’s a strange year.” But we suspect climate change is creating a new, unprecedented sort of normal in which there is no normal.

What a time to decide to become flower farmers! The good news is that we won’t get bored as we strive to build climate resiliency into our regenerative agriculture practices.

Also good is that the stress of farming during a climate catastrophe won’t turn our hair grey… because we already have grey hair!

We put our little red wagon filled with a number of bouquets out roadside this morning and sold out in an hour. We couldn’t believe it!

We have a LIMITED number of $25 ranunculus and anemone bouquets left — these are the arrangements we didn’t put outside — the ones meant to be just for us — more petite than giant bouquets (midsized), they are experimentations in color palates, ideations for future wedding bouquets. (Yes, we will be offering a small number of weddings a year to those couples who appreciate locally-grown flowers with a simple, slightly wild aesthetic.) The anemones will burst open between now and tomorrow, making each of these arrangements take the edge off this grey weather.

We can also arrange a bouquet of pale yellow irises for you ($30) — again, extremely limited, as these beauties have naturalized on our farm and we’re not prepared to offer them at scale as we are our other florals. Also happy to reserve a container of fresh edible violas… perfect over salads, in drinks, or in baked goods.

We can’t decide — purple and fuchsia hues? Sunny shades of yellow? Pinks, coral, and white? Over time, we’ll add other varieties of flowers to our event florals — but for now, it sure is rewarding to experiment with the rainbow of flowers growing in our field. Harvesting some anemones and ranunculus and making a few bouquets with our Tiny Treehorn is bliss. ☀️

We’re so stressed over a zillion things: How are we going to make enough money to live on (Melissa was let go from her full-time job in March, which was beyond stressful, demoralizing, and unfair). How are we ever going to find time to plant all of our seedlings? What is the best way to do our part during these dark days when polycide (the confluence of multiple horrific “cides”) is destroying entire populations of people and ecosystems? Is flower farming and the opening of a flower/bookshop really where we should put our energy?

But then we have conversations with customers (new friends!) — about some of the progressive titles we carry and our commitment to regenerative farming — about neurodiversity and trans rights and a slew of other people-oriented issues. And also just about growing flowers, how much rain we’re getting, bear sightings, and local happenings.

We continue to meet neighbors who stop by to wish us luck — some of whom may share our views, and others who may not. But we are kind to each other. Open. The words, “love thy neighbor like you love yourself” keeps popping into our conversations around the dinner table at night.

And it’s in those moments — when we feel community so deeply — that we think, yes, regenerative flower farming and opening a small, progressive bookshop in rural NY is absolutely important. It’s a culmination of so many things that make us tick — our love of music, words, stories, people, and all manner of growing things — including social justice moments. It’s what we call “Farming on the Spectrum” — and there are truly wonderful moments that pepper the stress with love and beauty.🌈

In “Mother, Creature, Kin,” @chelseasteinauerscudder writes about each of these remarkable creatures (among many others) as she wonders: What it mean to be a mother in an era of climate catastrophe? And what can we learn from the plants and creatures who mother at the edges of their world’s unraveling?

More importantly, she confronts what it means to be a “mother” — to do the good work of being in service to the living world. What if we could all mother the places we live and the beings with whom we share those places? And what if they also mother us?

This is a gorgeous, lyrical book. While it discusses the climate catastrophe, it presents a healthy, realistic dose of eco-optimism. Come find it on our shelves at our grand opening — May 22 — 11:30-5:00. (You can also find it in our online store!)

Well, it’s a wrap! Our soft opening was a smash — and the best part? Meeting some of our neighbors for the first time and spending time with new (and old!) friends.

Your support means the world. One of you even drove up from another state! *Happy tears*

(Oh, and no names, but I owe $1.62 to one of you because… we forgot to get change for our cash register! We’ll make sure you get it!)

Our hearts are full. And our olfactory bulbs are working on overtime due to the lily-of-the-valley bouquets on our counter. Holy cow, so those small posies change the mood, or what!

The curtains aren’t up, the trim around the windows isn’t done, the register isn’t working properly, the side yard AND farm are half-finished, the parking isn’t sorted, there’s a giant pile of compost looking ugly as sin under a giant blue tarp, we haven’t had time to make all of our outdoor signs, the rain has prevented us from planting most of our flowers outdoors, lights aren’t strung around the fire pit, and only half the items are priced…

Sounds about right for a soft opening! Come by to help cheer us on and grab a book or Mother’s Day flowers and gifts!

We’ve got two weeks to nail this before our GRAND OPENING on May 22 — with a ribbon cutting with the fabulous @greenecountychamber — but for now, we’re pleased as punch over what we’ve accomplished and we can’t wait to celebrate with you!

We didn’t plan to grow tulips for sale this year — we have too many other flowers on our plate — but we did receive a donation of bulbs… We were too busy to plant them in the fall, so we quickly threw them willy-nilly into the ground a month ago. (Don’t judge!! We have a baby, jobs, Mark’s tour, blah blah, blah…)
